US military deaths in the Iraq "war", so far : 4,489
Total military deaths in the Iraq "war", so far : 4,808

Please Select Database:
Iraq
Afghanistan...

-- and now in 2010 still reads that way,

Afghanistan Coalition Military Fatalities, so far : 3,486...

-- and now too in 2011, Libya?

-- aaand now in 2012, who or what will be called-in to pacify The Greeks?
"Unthinkable", you say... "And anyway the Greeks are far away and the US has no 'interests'..."
"But perhaps we could find some local colonels, who might help..."
And so the beat goes on... la di da di dee...

"Solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant / They make a desolation and they call it peace."
-- the Caledonian chieftain Calgacus, describing the Roman Empire, Tacitus Agr 30.

Total Iraqi civilian deaths in the Iraq "war", on any given date:
* President Bush, as of Dec 12, 2005: "about 30,000..."
* Iraq Body Count (US volunteer group), as of Dec 28, 2006: "52,054 to 57,617"

And just one among many other ironies, in all of this...

VA edits tally of U.S. war wounded (NY Times, January 30, 2007)
"For the last few months, anyone / who consulted the Veterans Affairs Department's Web site to learn how many U.S. troops had been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number shown was 50,508. But on Jan. 10, without explanation, the figure plummeted to 21,649..."

"We won't get fooled again...
[but]
Meet the New Boss, same as the Old Boss..."

This, my presentation of the above on this "FYI France" website, is not an anti-war statement -- that would be irrelevant, to a site ostensibly devoted to books & libraries & The Internet in France -- and, besides, I don't agree with that... I do not believe that "peace is simply an armistice in an ongoing war", as Thucydides apparently advised us, or as he did per WonderWoman anyway (it's about Ypres, and Gadot is great, see it), or as he should have perhaps; and I do believe "the use of force is failure", as an also-possibly-apocryphal old Chinese saying advises, but it's just that sometimes we do fail... and for such failures we must be and must remain prepared... Not so well-prepared as some of us are or want to be, however, the line between over-preparation & self-fulfilling prophecy being a very thin one in these military arenas, as Dwight Eisenhower so famously warned all of us, not so long ago -- see & read & re-consider now,

Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961
http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/indust.html

Here on a site devoted to online digital information, however, the above represents an outstanding use of same, I believe -- which makes it very relevant here -- the Internet brings us not only very much data plus some sometimes-good information, it also connects us in new and more effective ways for our other non-digital interests and activities, including policy & politics & the-way-we-spend-our-money, on education & libraries & in other arenas.

So this FYI France site shows many, including them, how the French do it -- also, in the above instance, how we in the US do things -- it would be good for The World if we were to have many-such similar to the above, I believe, a "nationalpriorities" site for every nation... someday, one can hope... that would be one of the best uses made so far, of our new online networked digital information tool and its Internet, or so I personally believe. JK.
